When ESPN’s Todd McShay wrote his first mock draft in the middle of December, the Giants picked a quarterback with, at the time, the No. 10 pick.
Now that the draft order is solidified and New York has the sixth pick, he has New York picking that same quarterback.
McShay predicts the Giants will draft Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins over Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray to be Eli Manning‘s heir.
“Imagine this big-armed signal-caller uncorking shots to Odell Beckham Jr. or finding Saquon Barkley in the flat. Sound fun?” McShay wrote. “The one-year Buckeyes starter shows good touch and anticipation and could be Big Blue’s quarterback of the future. It makes perfect sense here, as long as another quarterback-hungry team doesn’t hop the Giants via a trade.”
McShay’s mock draft 2.0 is hardly the first to have the Giants picking a quarterback. SNY.tv’s Ralph Vacchiano has the Giants drafting Haskins, as does Sports Illustrated’s Kalyn Kahler and ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. However, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein has the Giants passing on Haskins and picking Duke quarterback Daniel Jones.
Haskins, who finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting, said in December “it would be pretty nice” if the Giants drafted him, however, Giants GM Dave Gettleman has said he would not prioritize a quarterback in the draft.
“If you make something a priority, you will make a mistake,” he told reporters after the season. “It’s got to be within the flow of what you’re doing. You can’t force it. Especially at quarterback.”
But the 21-year-old Haskins, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound redshirt sophomore, is coming off a season in which he threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Rose Bowl champion Ohio State Buckeyes. He also ran for 108 yards and four touchdowns in 2018.
